During the Fourth of July holiday – the most recent enforcement period thus far in 2010’s “100 Days of Heat Campaign” – law enforcement officers made 615 DUI arrests across Colorado. In addition, according to preliminary reports from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the death of one of four people killed in traffic accidents over the same July 1 through July 6 timeframe is thought to have occurred in an alcohol-related crash.
“One of the preventable deaths we saw over the holiday weekend was in a high-profile suspected DUI case on I-25,” Col. James Wolfinbarger, chief of the Colorado State Patrol, said in a press release. “While the case is still under investigation, we do know that the driver did not have a history of DUI. It’s a reminder that anyone can make a dangerous and sometimes deadly decision. But that means anyone can also make a safe decision to designate a sober driver before drinking.”
CDOT reported that the following agencies made the highest number of DUI arrests during the holiday period: 76 Denver DUI arrests, Denver Police Department; 35 arrests by the Aurora Police Department; 29 by the Colorado Springs Police Department; 20 by the Colorado State Patrol in Adams County; and 20 DUI arrests by the Lakewood Police Department. Both Adams County and Lakewood conducted sobriety checkpoints over the July 4 weekend.
The “100 Days of Heat” DUI crackdown is a summer-long program that combines a public awareness campaign with increased DUI enforcement. Since it started, over the Memorial Day weekend, 1,339 drivers have been arrested for impaired driving around the state.
The alcohol-related fatalities and DUI arrests are down from last year’s July 4 holiday weekend, when three people were killed by drunk drivers and officers made 647 DUI arrests.
