Colorado cops start July 4 DUI enforcement early

Hotter than the 4th of July: Colorado cops start holiday enforcement early

There’s only one thing hotter than the 4th of July this year, and that’s Colorado’s plans for “The Heat is On” during the Independence Day holiday.

More than 80 law enforcement agencies plan to participate in the holiday crackdown on drunk driving, and the stepped-up enforcement begins early, with increased and saturation patrols and DUI checkpoints kicking in on Friday, June 29 and continuing through Thursday, July 5.  The seven-day campaign is part of the state’s high-visibility 100 Days of Heat blitzkrieg, which couples increased pressure on DUIs with a public awareness campaign.

During last year’s six-day enforcement period, Colorado officers made 551 DUI arrests.

“As you make plans to celebrate with friends and family this Fourth of July week, please remember to include a plan for getting home safely, especially if your celebrations will include alcohol,” Col. James Wolfinbarger, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol, said in a press release. “The Fourth of July is one of the deadliest holidays of the year, and so our troopers will be out in force showing zero tolerance for impaired drivers in an effort to save lives.”

According to statistics compiled by the Colorado Department of Transportation, July was the worst month of 2011 for alcohol-related fatalities in Colorado, with 24 people killed. Three of those deaths occurred over the Fourth of July holiday period.

The following agencies plan to hold sobriety checkpoints over the holiday period:

Friday, June 29
Lakewood Police Department and Colorado State Patrol

Weld County DUI Task Force
Westminster Police Department

Saturday, June 30
Colorado State Patrol Troop 6C, Broomfield
Aurora Police Department

Sunday, July 1
Denver Police Department

The Colorado State Patrol in Greeley also plans to hold checkpoints, but administrators have not disclosed when those will occur.

See below for a list of enforcement plans around the state.  For more details about the DUI enforcement plans by agency, as well as arrest results after the enforcement period, check www.HeatIsOnColorado.com.
