New Year’s Colorado DUI Arrest Numbers

Colorado law enforcement officers arrested 495 people for suspicion of Driving Under the Influence during the New Year’s weekend crackdown, 119 more than the same period in 2011.

Statistics released by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) encompassed a five-day period, from Friday, December 28 through Wednesday, January 2.  More than 100 agencies took part in the increased enforcement.

Not surprisingly, the state’s largest metro areas reported the highest number of arrests: Denver Police topped the charts with 50 arrests, followed closely by Aurora Police with 49, and Colorado Springs with 34.  In all, 14 of the agencies reported arrest numbers in the double digits.  Twenty-six agencies reported no DUI-related arrests.

The New Year’s enforcement is the last of the dozen Heat Is On campaign periods that occur each year.  CDOT provides grants to law enforcement agencies statewide to conduct overtime DUI enforcement using state and federal funding. The stepped-up enforcement is an attempt to curb the number of alcohol-related driving fatalities that occur each year.  According to CDOT, nearly 200 people are killed in alcohol-related traffic crashes each years, representing approximately 40 percent of Colorado’s total motor vehicle fatalities.
