Jay Tiftickjian, known across Colorado for DUI defense, is featured in a new national publication about forensic science. Titled Understanding Forensic Science in Criminal Cases, the book focuses on how lawyers use forensic science in the courtroom to defend persons accused of DUI and other criminal offenses.
Tiftickjian co-authored two chapters for this book. The first, titled “Unraveling the Confrontation Clause: Expert Testimony and Forensic Reports After Williams v. Illinois,” outlines the history of the confrontation clause and how expert reports and findings are admitted into evidence at trial by the government. Tiftickjian collaborated on this chapter with Colorado Springs attorney Timothy Bussey. The second chapter, “Understanding the Government’s Playbook: How Systemic Toxicology Laboratory Failures are Spun,” was co-authored with Bakersfield defense attorney Jeremy Brehmer. The chapter discusses forensic laboratory failures across the country, including the recent shut-down of the Colorado Department of Health’s DUI blood testing lab.
