Colorado’s “The Heat is On” campaign, which targets particular holiday periods for increased enforcement of DUI laws, will be in full force this Memorial Day weekend, from May 23 through the 26th and, in some jurisdictions, May 27.
Enforcement efforts include increased drunk driving patrols, “multi-agency saturation” patrols, and DUI checkpoints throughout the state. A list of agency-by-agency enforcement plans appears can be found here.
In Adams County, for example, a checkpoint is planned at 8200 Highway 85, from 7:30 p.m. from Friday, May 23, to 2:00 a.m. on May 25. In addition, saturation patrols will be carried out over an even longer period by officers from the Highway Patrol, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and Police Departments in Brighton, Commerce City, Federal Heights, Northglenn, Thornton and Westminster.
Similar plans are in effect for virtually every Colorado county, with additional checkpoints planned in Fruita, Glenwood Springs, Vail, the north precinct of Jefferson County, as well as two “roving” checkpoints in Denver.
The campaign, sponsored by the Colorado Department of Transportation, supplies funding for extra officers and overtime hours for the express purpose of detecting and apprehending possible drunk and drug-impaired drivers.
