Judge Elects Trial by Combat

Apparently, Judge John Murphy of Brevard County, Florida, suffered a lapse in judicial temperament recently, when he challenged the local public defender to a fight after the lawyer refused to waive his client’s right to a speedy trial. The exchange was caught on video.

In the hallway and outside the view of cameras, the judge allegedly grabbed the lawyer by his collar and punched him in the head. Gregor Clegane (from the Game of Thrones) might approve, but the Florida bar and judicial commission will probably not.

This one is a head-scratcher. We know that many judges show outward disdain for defense attorneys, and don’t like certain crimes, such as driving under the influence and crimes against children, but this puts a black-eye on the entire criminal justice system (no pun intended).
