As reported by the Watch, 96 Colorado law enforcement agencies are prepping for increased patrols and checkpoints throughout the state as part of the Department of Transportation’s “The Heat is On” campaign for the Independence Day weekend.
The crackdown begins Wednesday, July 2, at 6 p.m. and will continue through 3 a.m. on Monday.
The July 4 weekend has been particularly troublesome in recent years. In 2012, 14 Colorado residents were killed in the month of July because of alcohol-related automobile crashes. In 2013, the number of fatalities was cut in half as, during the heightened weekend enforcement period, 632 persons were arrested in Colorado for impaired driving.
