This number is less than half of the 632 arrested in the same time frame last year. Early reports indicate that DUI-related fatalities may also be on the downswing. In 2012, fourteen persons died as a result of DUI accidents in July. In 2013, the number dropped to seven. Over the past holiday weekend, three persons lost their lives, according to the reports. It remains to be seen whether those numbers hold up, especially since the month of July typically involves so much tourist travel, but it appears that Colorado’s emphasis on holiday enforcement may be having the intended effect.
Colorado law enforcement agencies hold a highly-publicized campaign every summer called “Heat is On.” The goal is to raise public awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving, as well as increase enforcement with saturation patrol and DUI checkpoints.
