Law enforcement agencies across the state of Colorado are all planning to ramp up efforts to arrest drivers suspected of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol over the upcoming Labor Day weekend. The additional enforcement is part of the “Heat is On” campaign, which aims to crack down on drunk drivers during twelve specific periods of time throughout the year, mostly around major holidays. The campaign is a collaborative effort between the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) and local law enforcement departments, with funding from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
The CDOT funding will specifically pay for overtime wages for officers, so that law enforcement may increase their patrol throughout the state. The funding also pays for added training for officers in field sobriety testing and other DUI stop-related matters.
DUIs Peak around Holidays
Similar increased focus targeting DUIs occurs around almost every major holiday. Holidays often involve dinners, barbecues, and other gatherings with friends and family, and such gatherings regularly involve alcohol. Additionally, many people travel around the holidays, so more people tend to be on the roads and may believe they have limited transportation options aside from their own vehicle.
Labor Day has an especially high instance of DUI since it also coincides with end-of-summer activities, such as concerts or festivals. These types of activities also tend to involve alcohol. Last year, the DUI crackdown campaign resulted in over 1,300 arrests on suspicion of DUI over Labor Day weekend alone.
How to Prevent DUIs over Labor Day
Because of the increased DUI enforcement in Denver and throughout the state over Labor Day, everyone should take particular care to avoid a DUI arrest. If you believe you will be drinking alcohol, plan ahead for your transportation, especially if you are from out of town or are unfamiliar with the area. Designated drivers, public transportation, and taxi cabs are all good options if you think there is even a chance you are over the legal limit to drive.
Additionally, the Heat is On campaign is providing free overnight parking in “Last Call Lots” located at Larimer and 21st. The lots will be open during Friday nights through the end of August and will allow up to thirty cars to remain from 6:00 p.m. on Friday until 10:00 a.m. on Saturday in a secure, guarded lot, free of charge.
Just remember as we approach the end of summer and Labor Day weekend that you have options to avoid drinking and driving. A DUI can carry severe penalties, such as costly fines and even jail time. These penalties only increase if you have had a prior DUI conviction or if you were involved in an accident while suspected of DUI.
