DUI Convictions may have Far-Reaching Implications

When you think of the usual penalties for a driving under the influence (DUI) conviction, you likely think of probation, fines, and possibly time spent in jail. However, many people do not realize that there are far more potential consequences of a DUI that can have a long-lasting effect on your personal or professional life. The number one kicker for the Denver Broncos has learned this lesson the hard way in recent weeks.

Matt Prater, the highest-rated kicker in the National Football League (NFL) in 2013, was first convicted of DUI in 2008, shortly after signing with the Broncos. Prater again faced charges for DUI and for leaving the scene of an accident in 2011. Following that incident, Prater entered the NFL’s substance abuse program, which prohibits drinking even on the off-season. This past summer, Prater tested positive for alcohol after he claims he had three beers while on vacation, and the NFL has suspended him for the first four games of the 2014 season. Prater was lucky, as the NFL originally suggested a suspension for one year. As Prater’s case shows, DUI convictions can affect you for a long time, as even having three beers a full three years after his DUI has had a negative effect on his career and professional reputation.

Unexpected DUI Consequences

People in certain professions are especially at risk for long-lasting DUI implications. For example, commercial truck drivers are subject to very strict DUI laws and penalties if they are convicted. A commercial driver will face a license suspension or revocation following a DUI, which will likely completely eliminate his ability to earn a living as a truck driver. Even after getting his license back, a truck driver may still face sanctions from his employer and may have to complete substantial rehabilitative steps before resuming work.

Similarly, many jobs require an employee to have a clean driving record and valid license since the work may involve operating some type of motor vehicle. This may affect construction workers, delivery workers, utility workers, and much more.

Aside from professional implications, a DUI may have a substantial effect on your personal life, as well. Probation and license suspension may limit your freedom and ability to travel, as well as requiring you to submit to alcohol testing and/or attend regular substance abuse classes. Additionally, some offenders may be required to wear a SCRAM bracelet or have an ignition interlock device installed in their vehicle. Such devices can seem like a significant invasion of privacy since it signals the public that you have been in trouble for an alcohol-related criminal offense. Thus, DUI offenders may face many professional and personal struggles for a long time following a conviction.
